NEW HEIGHTS PHILOSOPHY: New Heights was founded in 2006 based on the idea that rigorous learning requires a caring learning community and that students’ academic, social, emotional, and physical development are interrelated. Essential to this vision is a set of beliefs about the importance of school culture and its role in supporting continuous improvement in teaching and learning. New Heights is organized around a cohesive set of shared ideas and practices about teaching and learning and the faculty work together to provide a coordinated experience for students as they progress through the school.
A SHORT HISTORY OF NEW HEIGHTS: New Heights is in its sixth year of operation and currently serves 330 low-income African and Latino students in South Los Angeles. Over 50% of our students live below the poverty line and 98% of our students qualify for the free lunch program. New Heights was designed as a K-8 school in order to provide students with a strong early education and continue to nurture their academic, social, and emotional development through their adolescent years. New Heights operates a before and after school program, serving students from 7:00 am – 6:15 pm each day. New Heights was given a 5-year charter by LAUSD in 2006 and a second 5-year renewal charter in 2011.
WASC ACCREDITATION: New Heights Charter School engaged in an intensive self-study process to earn initial WASC Accreditation in its first year of operation. Two years ago, the school was awarded a six-year accreditation term (with a one-day visit in Year 3 of the term.) The faculty and staff engage in ongoing assessment and review of the school program, actively seeking parent input and feedback. New Heights Charter School has many strengths such as dedicated and intelligent teachers and staff, strong and continuous leadership, a coherent vision and educational plan, ongoing, high-quality professional development, and a collaborative, problem-solving school culture that supports learning and risk-taking. New Heights’ faculty and staff also have a keen awareness that the school is continually growing and changing as we learn together how to best serve our students and families.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: New Heights Charter School has an API of 787. Last year, the school achieved a similar schools score of 9 (out of 10.) Internally, the school designs performance-based assessments to keep track of student progress. Students maintain a digital portfolio of their work, starting in Kinder, to demonstrate progress primarily in reading, writing, and math.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT: Parent involvement is valuable to increase the school’s understanding of our students, connect student learning to home culture, and provide an authentic audience for student work. Parents/guardians participate by volunteering 30 hours of time, which includes attendance at schoolwide family events (five times a year), parent/teacher/student conferences (twice a year), student publishing celebrations, exhibitions of student work, and volunteering in the classroom or office.
