Rigorous and creative thinking in a healthy and
caring community.
Curriculum
English Language Arts
The curriculum focuses on reading fluency and comprehension. Every day students learn new skills to improve their writing and reading in Writers’ and Reader’s Workshop. Teachers use Systematic Instruction in Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, and Sight Words (SIPPS) to develop fluency and Making Meaning to enhance comprehension – both have proven track records of increasing student achievement. Students learn new vocabulary through Text Talk and word study.
Math
New Heights’ teachers use the Singapore Math approach to help students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Students learn why math works in order to master complex problem-solving.
Social Studies
Teachers use active instructional strategies with Social Studies and History Alive. Students work in cooperative groups to learn progressively more difficult concepts through a process of discovery.
Science
New Heights uses Full Option Science System (FOSS) and It’s About Time (for 6th grade), both research-based science curricula that provides active engagement for students. The programs feature core content integrated with scientific thinking processes.
Caring School Community
Central to our vision of students becoming capable, caring citizens, New Heights is implementing the nationally recognized, research-based Caring School Community program, developed by the Development Studies Center. The program includes classroom management, school-wide events to increase the bonds among all stakeholders, literacy-based activities for parents and students to do together at home, and cross-age buddy activities to support learning and build relationships.
Physical Education and the Arts
While many schools are eliminating programs, New Heights students engage in regular PE classes using the research-based SPARK program. In addition, students participate in classes in the arts. The free afterschool program includes drumming, dance, step, drama, and choir.
