Program Goals and Requirements
The purpose of the After School Program at New Heights Charter School is to provide a program that is safe, educational, engaging and improves academic performance. The program is open everyday that school is in session and is available from the time school ends until 6:15 p.m. There is no charge for participation and enrollment is open to all the students of New Heights, subject to the limitations imposed by program capacity.
The program offers students homework help and academic enrichment. In addition the program offers nutrition and physical fitness, arts and crafts, and other recreational activities.
Enrollment in the after school program begins during school orientation and continues throughout the year until enrollment requirements are met. Parents are required to complete an application, early release form, and Student Success Contract.
Program Content
Students are offered a variety of activities across the various curricular domains. Some are designed to provide remediation, others to expand students’ knowledge and experience, and others to promote fitness and health. The afterschool program uses KidzLit to support literacy. KidzLit is based on scientific research that finds effective literacy program provide opportunities for children to listen to good literature read aloud by good readers and engages children in discussions about literature. The physical fitness component is based on the SPARK program. SPARK is a research-based program that supports students’ lifelong wellness.
Nutrition
Snacks are an important component of the after school program. The snacks are healthy and meet the requirements of the Federal School Lunch program.
