New Heights Charter School Board Member Information 2016-17


Peter Schoenfeld, President (BA, UCLA; BS, UCLA; JD, Columbia University School of Law) was on the development team and served as Principal for Cornerstone Prep School, a K-8 charter school in Los Angeles. Mr. Schoenfeld was President of Universal Studios New Media Group. Prior, Mr. Schoenfeld was Executive Vice President and Group Strategic Director of Universal Studios Television & Networks Group.  Prior to Universal Studios, Mr. Schoenfeld served as senior counsel for Twentieth Century Fox in Los Angeles and was a corporate lawyer at Shearman & Sterling (New York) and Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison (Los Angeles).  Mr. Schoenfeld is currently active in the Pacific Counsel on International Policy and the Los Angeles Committee on Foreign Relations. Mr. Schoenfeld is the New Heights Charter School Financial Officer.

Kelli-Ann Agner, Secretary (PhD in progress, Claremont Graduate University, M.S. in Education, Mount St. Mary’s College) is currently an Assistant Professor of Education at Mount St. Mary’s College as well as the Fieldwork Coordinator, & TPA Coordinator. Formerly, Ms. Agner was a teacher and an Assistant Principal in Los Angeles. Her academic focus is assessment and studying students at risk. Ms. Agner is the New Heights Charter School Board Secretary.

Helene Brown, Financial Officer (BS, UCLA) has been on the forefront of the health effort to combat cancer for the past 60 years. She is currently serving as Director, Community Applications of Research, Division of Cancer Control, UCLA  Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.  She has also been an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Public Health lecturing on such topics as: Cancer Control, Cancer Control in the Community, Unproven methods of Cancer Management and Community Role in Voluntary Health Agencies and public health.

Octavia Miles, Board Member (BA, UCLA) has worked in marketing and communications for the past 40 years in the corporate sector. Her past employers include Mattel Corporation and Gallo in Napa Valley. Octavia brings years of strategic planning and business knowledge to her work with New Heights.

Gail Berlant is a seasoned development professional having spent 23 years supporting the mission of the American Cancer Society through a variety of fundraising, special event, and community engagement initiatives.  She led the organization’s major gift strategy in Los Angeles, including oversight of Hope Lodge Los Angeles, a $25M endeavor to provide temporary housing to cancer patients traveling to Los Angeles for treatment.  In addition, she is responsible for securing over $20M during her tenure to sustain the Society’s research, direct patient services, and community awareness activities.  Having retired from the Society in 2014, Gail now spends her time consulting for other nonprofits, mentoring development executives, and focusing on her personal philanthropic priorities. gaildberlant@gmail.com

Michelle Robson has focused on education and at-risk youth since retiring from the Capital Group Companies in 2010 after an 18 year tenure.  At The Capital Group, she was a senior vice president entrusted with the management of investment portfolios in fixed income.   She has served as a trustee for the Partnership Scholars Program and is a trustee of The Willows Community School.  She has also volunteered as a mentor for Los Angeles Team Mentoring.
